Tummy Tuck Recovery Week by Week - What to Expect

Are you considering a tummy tuck procedure? If so, it’s important to understand the recovery process and what to expect in the weeks following your surgery. The tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a popular cosmetic surgery that helps tighten and reshape the abdominal area for a flatter and more toned appearance. To ensure a smooth recovery, it’s essential to follow the guidance of your surgeon and have a clear understanding of the healing timeline.

In this article, our team at Premier Surgical Plastic Surgery in Knoxville will take you through the tummy tuck recovery process week by week, so you know exactly what to expect after your procedure.

  • Immediately after the surgery, you’ll be taken to a recovery area where you’ll be closely monitored by the medical staff.
  • You may experience some pain and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed pain medications.
  • You’ll need to wear a compression garment to support the healing process and minimize swelling.

First 24 – 48 hours:

  • Premier Surgical Plastic Surgery patients will have a post-op appointment with Dr. Lo. He’ll check your new belly button hold and your incisions.
  • Walking is encouraged to improve blood circulation, but lifting and strenuous activities must be avoided.
  • It is important to drink lots of water to stay hydrated and assist in healing.

Week 1:

  • You’ll have another follow-up appointment with your surgeon to access your belly button and incisions. Your drains will be removed one or two weeks after surgery, depending on your progress.
  • It’s common to have swelling and bruising around the treated area. This will gradually subside over time.

Week 2:

  • You will have a follow-up appointment with our Nurse Practitioner to assess your progress and remove any drains or stitches if necessary.
  • Swelling and bruising will continue to decrease, and you may start to see some initial results.
  • Your energy levels will improve, and you’ll be able to engage in light activities, but still avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercises.
  • It’s important to maintain a healthy diet and drink plenty of fluids to support the healing process.

Week 4:

  • By this time, most of the swelling and bruising should have subsided, and you’ll notice a significant improvement in your abdominal contour.
  • You can gradually increase your physical activities, but listen to your body and avoid anything that causes discomfort.
  • You will have a follow-up appointment at 4 weeks to access your progress and healing.
  • Your surgeon willprovide specific instructions for scar care, and show you how to apply scar gel  to help minimize scarring.
  • You should continue wearing the compression garment as directed by your surgeon to support the healing process.

3 Months:

  • At your 3 month check-up the Nurse Practitioner will check your incisions, belly button, and overall healing.
  • Your incisions will continue to heal, and the scars will begin to fade. However, it’s important to note that complete scar maturation can take several months.
  • You can start engaging in more vigorous exercises and activities, but still avoid high-impact movements that put strain on the abdominal area.
  • It’s essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, to optimize your results and overall well-being.

One year after surgery:

  • Your “After Surgery” photos will be taken at your one-year appointment.
  • Your one year visit is a chance to access the overall outcome of your procedure and your new look.
