For many women, size and shape of breasts are an important part of their image and self confidence. In the US, every year approximately 300,000 women get breast implants. Breast Augmentation also known as breast enlargement, breast implant, breast enhancement or ‘boob job’ is one of the most common cosmetic procedures and delivers significant image boost.

Common Reasons for Breast Augmentation Surgery

Your breasts are asymmetrical in terms of shape and size.
Your breasts are smaller than you would like them to be.
Your breasts have lost volume after nursing or weight loss.
You would like to reconstruct one or both of your breasts after a mastectomy.

Certain times breast augmentation alone may not be able to help with drooping and sagging breasts. In such cases, combination of breast lift with or without implants may be needed.

Type of Breast Implants

Broadly speaking there are two options when selecting breast implants: saline or silicone gel implants.

Silicone gel implants remain the most popular implant choice, as women like the feel and movement of their augmented breasts. Thick silicone gel inside the shell provides the firmness that resembles the real body tissue.

Saline implants are filled with sterilized saltwater. One advantage of these implants is that they can be placed while they’re empty and filled later. Filling these implants later allows the surgeon to control the volume.

Gummy Bear implants are another option. It’s a nickname for teardrop shaped gel based implants. Traditional implants tend to offer a round shape vs gummy bear’s teardrop shape. This option may be preferable if you’re seeking less fullness in the upper part of your breast, as well as a more natural droop at the bottom half. However it will be more noticeable if the implants rotate out of place since they aren’t the same shape on all sides.

Size of Breast Implants

The size of Breast Implants will depend on your desired result. Dr. Lo will take into account your body type, and existing breast size and shape to help you choose the best and most realistic implant size.

Type of Incision

Most common incision type is inframammary incision. The incision is made in the crease under the breast, where the breast meets the chest wall.

However depending on several factors such as the patient’s anatomy, the degree of enlargement desired or the type of implant, other incision options may be considered such as incisions made around the nipple (periareolar incision), or in the armpit (transaxillary incision).

Preparing for the procedure

bREAST aUG pRE-OP INFO

Breast Augmentation procedure takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Exact time depends upon the individual needs. It requires general anesthesia. Our staff will guide you on your preparation for the surgery day.

Following the surgery, you may need a caregiver to escort you home. After 3-4 days, there will be a post surgery consultation. Full recovery time is usually 4-6 weeks. You can resume light daily activity within 3-4 days of surgery but to resume strenuous activities, you may need to wait for 6 weeks.

Scarring after breast augmentation is permanent. Dr. Lo will however place the incision in low visibility areas, typically under the breast fold. If a breast lift is also required there is additional scarring around the areola. We will provide you with a scar-minimizing silicone gel to use after surgery. It is important to not expose your incision lines to the sun for the first 6 months as the sunlight can prevent the scars from fading. If you are tanning then cover your incision lines with a high-factor sunscreen (factor 60 or greater).
