Fat Grafting

Fat grafting is the process by which fat is transferred from one area of the body to another area. It is also commonly referred to as Fat Transfer. 

Goal of the procedure is to augment or improve the area where the fat is transferred. 

It is possible to sculpt an area of excess fat and inject your own fatty tissue into areas where fatty deposits have deteriorated. The most common sculpted through fat injection are brows or under the eyes to fill a sunken look. Fat grafting is also commonly can be applied to the hand, earlobes, breasts and areas that need lipo repairing.

Another very popular area for fat grafting is Buttock. Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is the popular procedure for it. People of all ages qualify for the butt lift procedure. Fat is removed from selected areas of your body, purified, and then re-injected into your buttocks. The butt appears lifted, perky and more attractive. 

Fat Grafting process

Step 1: Fat is extracted from a donor area using liposuction. This is usually a manual procedure using thin liposuction cannulas with small holes.

Step 2: The fat is then processed with decanting and centrifugation to separate debris, excess fluid, and dead cells from the viable adipose fat cells. An alternate method is to wash the fat with a sterile saline solution. The fat that is discarded are the fat cells which will likely not survive in the graft and they can even create problems for the good cells.

Step 3: Fat is re-injected in small droplets throughout the subcutaneous tissue of the recipient area. This is to ensure good blood supply to every fat droplet so that the fat graft can survive.

The amount of fat injected differs according to patient case specifics and the area of the body where the processed fat is being injected.

Recovery from the procedure

Depending upon the area of procedure, you can expect to recover in 3-6 weeks. Certain intense fat transfer cases may take longer to fully recover. Dr. Lo will guide you and explain you about your recovery regimen and steps to be taken for optimal recovery.
