How safe is Gynecomastia Surgery, a male breast reduction procedure and what men need to know about it?

Gynecomastia is a condition that causes enlargement of male breast tissue. An imbalance in testosterone and estrogen causes this condition. It can affect one or both breasts. Boys going through puberty, older men and even newborns can develop this condition. During puberty, male breast tissue can have an unwanted growth due to hormonal issues. In some cases, this breast tissue shrinks after puberty, but in many cases, the breasts remain enlarged. The prevalence of asymptomatic gynecomastia is 60% to 90% in children, 50% to 60% in adolescents and up to 70% in men aged 50 to 69 years.

Gynecomastia is not a serious condition, however it may affect the physical appearance of the men with the condition. Sometimes, men and boys with this condition experience pain in their breasts. Often, it is a great source of embarrassment and shame for many men. This is the reason why the number of men seeking surgery for this condition continues to rise.

Common causes of gynecomastia include puberty, excess weight gain, use of anabolic steroids in bodybuilders and use of marijuana. A number of other medications also cause male breast enlargement.

How do I know if I have gynecomastia?

Breast self-exams usually demonstrate a palpable, tender, firm, mobile, disc-like mound of tissue that is not as hard as breast cancer and is located centrally under the nipple-areolar complex. Gynecomastia usually occurs in both breasts, but patients may have asymmetric or unilateral breasts.

How Safe Is Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

The goal is to make the breasts firmer and smaller. The surgeon will achieve this goal by removing fatty, glandular tissue in the breast. Sometimes, to achieve the best results, the surgeon may perform liposuction. The procedure’s safety may be a concern for you. It is a simple procedure. When performed by a skilled and experienced cosmetic surgeon, it is quite safe.
