Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia surgery is an effective way of reducing the excess breast tissue. Excessive enlargement of the male breast affects a lot of men at some point during their life. Gynecomastia is a common condition characterized by the development of breast tissue upon the male chest. It can range from mild with small deposits just behind the nipple, to severe involving the majority of the anterior chest wall resulting in a true male breast or ‘man-boob’. 

Often it occurs during puberty and a lot of cases have been resolved by themselves. In some men however, despite a healthy weight and regular exercise, a stubborn area of tissue persists under the nipple and surrounding area creating a ‘man-boob.’ This may cause embarrassment and have an impact on the clothes and activity choices a man is happy to make. This excess breast tissue can be reduced by gynecomastia surgery. 

If you have a small amount of excess fat that is contributing to your enlarged male breasts, liposuction by itself can be a sufficient procedure. For more advanced cases, the procedure entails removing excess breast tissue and fat—and possibly skin—to shape and contour the chest area.

Recovery

Most patients can go home within 2-4 hours of surgery. You’ll need to take at least a few days off from work. Avoid strenuous activity for two weeks. After a couple of weeks, you can start doing regular day to day physical chores. In about 4-5 weeks, you can expect a recovery good enough to be doing an exercise or cardio.  Every person is different, so Dr. Lo will guide you on your recovery plan.
