About Breast Reduction
Breast reduction is a procedure that decreases the size and weight of the breasts to help alleviate discomfort and create a more proportionate silhouette.
Many women who seek this procedure often describe having chronic back, shoulder, and neck pain, headaches, deep bra-strap grooves, and rashes beneath their breasts. Large breasts can also limit mobility, making some physical activities or movements difficult. (1) At Premier Plastic Surgery, our surgical team performs breast reduction to refine your figure and effectively restore your daily comfort.
Benefits
There are several benefits to undergoing a breast reduction, including:
- Alleviated Pain: Eliminating excess tissue, fat, and skin can help reduce the chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain that heavy breasts can cause.
- Refined Proportions: You may achieve a more balanced and desirable silhouette by reducing the size of your breasts.
- Enhanced Mobility: Many women find that it is easier to perform physical activities and complete their daily routines without excessive breast weight.
- Reduced Irritation: A breast reduction can help eliminate irritation and rashing from chafing skin beneath the breast folds.
- Improved Posture: Undergoing a breast reduction can help improve the alignment of your spine, reducing the need to hunch or slouch.
- Elevated Self-Esteem: Many women report an improvement in their body confidence after experiencing the results of their procedure.
Candidates
Candidates for a breast reduction include anyone interested in alleviating pain or discomfort caused by enlarged or heavy breasts. This procedure is especially recommended for women experiencing chronic neck, back, or shoulder pain. Those experiencing recurring irritation or rashes beneath their breasts due to chafing may also find this procedure beneficial.
Anyone interested in this procedure should be in good general health and hold realistic expectations for their results. Candidates should be nonsmoking or willing to quit using nicotine before treatment and throughout their recovery. We also advise that women complete planning their families, as future pregnancies can alter the results of this procedure. Our surgeons will determine a patient’s eligibility during their personal consultation.
Personal Consultation
The first step to improving your comfort is attending a personal consultation. At this complimentary appointment, your surgeon will meet with you to learn more about your medical history, listen to your concerns, and take time to understand your procedure goals. They will evaluate the condition and quality of your breasts, as well as your general anatomy.
Using these details, they will determine your candidacy and start creating your treatment plan. They will recommend the best surgical techniques to help you achieve your goals, and they may suggest additional procedures that could enhance your results. Throughout the consultation, they will also take the time to answer each of your questions. By getting to know you more personally and gathering important information, they can create a personalized treatment plan that addresses each of your concerns and delivers your body goals.
To request your no-obligation consultation, please fill out our online contact form or call (865) 306-5680.
Preparation
During your consultation, your surgeon will provide personalized pre-operative instructions to help you prepare for your procedure. These instructions will vary for each patient, but following them closely will facilitate a smooth and successful procedure.
We may ask you to discontinue medications and supplements that contain blood-thinning properties. You will need to avoid alcohol for several days before the procedure; however, you should fully cease nicotine use several weeks in advance and throughout your recovery. You should prepare to take time away from your career and other commitments, as well as arrange for transportation home after your procedure. We also recommend obtaining any necessary medications in advance and arranging for at-home care.
Procedure
Our surgeon performs breast reduction on an outpatient basis, but the duration of your breast reduction can vary depending on the techniques used and the scale of the procedure. In any case, the procedure includes the administration of general anesthesia.
Surgical Breast Reduction
To perform surgical breast reduction, your surgeon will begin by making the necessary incisions. A vertical incision pattern can be used to address more moderate concerns. This technique places one incision around the areola and another that extends downward towards the breast crease. (2)
Our surgeon may use the Wise Pattern incision technique for more extensive corrections. This placement builds off the vertical incision, placing a third incision that extends horizontally beneath the breast crease. (2)
After making incisions, your Premier surgeon will remove excess tissue from the breasts.
This procedure is often performed in conjunction with liposuction. The surgeon will inject the breasts with a tumescent solution consisting of epinephrine, lidocaine, and saline. This helps minimize bleeding, numbs the local tissue, and swells the fat cells for easier removal. They will then insert a cannula through the incision and carefully move it back and forth to break down excess fat before suctioning it out of the body. (3) Your surgeon will carefully contour your chest and surrounding areas.
Recovery
After your breast reduction, you will need to take time away from your career and responsibilities to focus on your recovery. You can expect to experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness around your breasts, but these effects are temporary and will gradually dissipate on their own. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medications to help reduce your discomfort and provide you with a compression bra to wear as you heal, which will help minimize swelling and support your breasts. You will likely feel ready to return to work within one to two weeks, but you will need to continue avoiding physical activities and strenuous tasks until your surgeon provides clearance.
During your personal consultation, your surgeon will provide more detailed recovery instructions. If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery, our team will be here to support you.
Results
You may notice a difference in your chest immediately after your procedure, but the full results will become more noticeable after any swelling subsides. You will be able to enjoy smaller, more proportionate, and sculpted breasts. Any neck, back, or shoulder pain will disappear, and you may also notice improvements in your posture. Breast reduction produces long-lasting and durable results; however, pregnancy or weight fluctuations may affect the appearance of your breasts, so you should try to maintain healthy lifestyle habits.

Most women can breastfeed after undergoing their procedure, but we do not recommend it, as breastfeeding can alter their results. If you are interested in breastfeeding or have any concerns, you should discuss this during your consultation.
Is there an ideal age to receive a breast reduction?
Breast reduction has no specific age range. As long as your breasts have fully developed and you understand the implications of this procedure, you may be a suitable candidate.
What happens if I gain weight after my breast reduction?
Fluctuations in weight may affect the results of your procedure. You must maintain a healthy lifestyle to preserve the effects of your breast reduction.
Will there be any visible scarring after my breast reduction?
There will be scarring after the procedure, but our surgeons take great care in placing incisions in inconspicuous areas. Scarring typically fades over time until barely noticeable.
Can I combine my breast reduction with another procedure?
Yes, many women choose to combine their breast reduction procedures with another procedure for more cohesive results. For more information and personalized recommendations, we recommend scheduling a consultation.
